Placing the Train Horns at the Right Location
Most railroads give a lot of importance on locomotives and its uses and features. They make sure that they order locomotives that have various features that will be needed to match operations. Aside from that, they should also consider the train horns that are mounted on these locomotives in strategic locations of the train where it can be heard effectively and for easier maintenance.
Examples of these mounting applications are the Air Chime model K5H train horn which can be found on the custom bracket together with the bell that is air operated. Another is the Leslie Model S5T train horn is found at the top of the Seaboard System locomotive cab roof and is placed in the usual location. The Northfolk Southern GP38-2 train horn can be easily located on high-short hooded locomotives even you are far from the operating cab of the train.
The train horn is placed at the top of the engine compartment of new locomotives to avoid more complaints coming from train crews about the noise made by these train horns. Also this will diminish the possibility of theft. Though with this, the performance of the acoustic sound is affected. More often than not, the sound will also soften as well. They have an advantage and disadvantages in terms of giving warning signs to people.
Suburban residents of NIMBY’s and the CAVE groups have been against the use of train horns as a warning signal for trackside even when the railroad development has taken place in most places because of the noise that it makes to their areas. Also, there have been plans and attempts of assigning quiet zones and so train engine crews are requested not to make use of their train horns except in emergency cases. However, some instances and accidents occur due to lack of warning sounds from these trains, and collisions of automobiles in trains would result from this. Also there have been cases of train horn thefts which recently happened at present have been said to be for the benefit of truckers and for those who customize vehicles.
There have also been cases also of train horns being fitted secretly and sneakily to a truck and SUV’s and it should not be done because it is against the ordinances that gives concern with noise problems and it can lead to accidents because of its sound power. It is allowed however for train horns to be collected especially the ones that are rare and valuable. Also the sounding of these horns can also be allowed on performances on runby’s or any event as long as permission is given by owners.
Train horns have to be mounted in locations where their use will be maximized and they will stay there for a longer period of time. They should be therefore placed in a prominent position. The owner has to collect responsibly and the vehicle makers or that customize are concealed and should not be seen on the vehicle which is found to be questionable.
